Episode 2: Roman Diaries: 9 Things You Must Eat in Italy!
Italy – the name of
this country is symbolic of culture, history and a world of food. Italian
cuisine is probably one of the most talked about, and loved cuisines in the
world. At least one Italian restaurant stands in every major city across
the globe. Such is the adoration for this cuisine, that sometimes it is connotative of only Pizza or Pasta broadly. But once we delve
into their cuisine and travel the country, we get to experience their wide culinary range, and why
Italians love their food so much! Here are 9 kinds of Food/ Beverage to try
when travelling to Italy!
- Gelato: Also
known as Ice cream in most parts of the world! But surely Gelatos of Italy are
a class apart. We made it a point to try out various flavors, but I must say I
loved the classic Chocolate the most. They had various options in chocolate, fruits and even fruit sorbets, each had
their own unique flavor. Lemongrass for instance was fantastic. We
tried these from places across the towns, as we traveled. Photos taken: Gelatos

- Cured Meat: If desserts isn't your thing, then this would interest you surely. Italians love their meat cured. We had this a few times in our meals. In one of the restaurants, we particularly loved it, as they were served with Rocket leaves. The flavour of the meat with the slightly tangy after taste of the Rockets went brilliantly. - Pasta & Pizza (Of course!): Where
do I begin on this one! It is too huge to start talking on them, as the world
as we speak now is obsessed with Pizza and Pasta. Come weekend, and we all have
our fare share of Italian cuisine from a friendly neighborhood joint. But how often, do I get to say that I had
Pasta with Pesto sauce sitting in a rustic Italian restaurant in La Spezia overlooking
the Mediterranean Sea . Or having a Napolitana Pizza at Vatican city looking at
St Peter’s Square, or for that matter gorging on sea food Pasta, Spaghetti
Carbonara , mixed meat Pizza for every meal, so the list goes on! Photos taken : Ham and Mushroom Pizza; Napolitana
Pizza; Pasta with Pesto sauce; Pasta with Salmon; Spaghetti with Mussels and
Scampi; Mixed Seafood Pasta
- Sea-food: As much as they love meat, Italians know how to cook their Sea food too! Mussels are a must try. At one place we had Spaghetti cooked with clams, which was exceptional. We also tried delicately cooked Octopus, and Squids at Cinque Terre, a district in La Spezia. It is a UNESCO world heritage site and serves some of the freshest and finest sea food to it’s customers. The Octopus was cooked to perfection, was soft and delicious. The Squids were cooked the same way. At
Cinque Terre, the sea food was super fresh. There were small shops selling Sea
food fritters on sticks! They were warm and crunchy, were a must try. Photo

- Vino: Italy is incomplete without a taste of it’s very own wine. I am no connoisseur , but I know a very good wine from an average one for sure! We travelled to Northern parts of Italy , to Tuscany a place known for it’s wine the world over. Red wine from this province is the finest . Then we trekked through Cinque Terre, which is known as the Liguria province of Italy. This place is renowned for it’s White wine typically best drunk with local cuisine, eg Seafood. - Tripa ala Florentine: We were told not to leave Florence without tasting this dish. It is a slow cooked stew , made from the intestinal wall of a cow. This dish is a delicacy to be had in Florence. The flavors were very mild and balanced, and went very well with the assorted breads. Photo taken: Tripe ala Florentine in Florence
- Rissotto: This is a must try dish too. We went for the meat dish, although I would have loved to go with a creamier option. Photo taken : Rissotto ala Fiorentina
- Coffee and Pastries: Italians love their coffee. Most of the towns have a very prevalent Coffee culture. Almost every corner of the street, and vending machines in the stations have facility for a shot of Espresso or Cappuccino to keep the Italians and the travelers going for the day. Their Brioches, plain ones, and cream filled ones serve as good breakfast at most stations. At
Naples, we had Puff pastries with Limoncello cream filling, and 'cold' Cafe Latte. Absolutely delicious, and a must try! Photo taken: In Naples and Rome
- Limoncello: - Lemon flavoured liquer! I like! It is available across the country, however it hails from south of Italy, Naples. When in Italy, this a must try!
