Ever since the day I had eaten at Punjab Grill , I had made a mental note to myself to be back soon. However, weeks added to months and for reasons one or the other I have not been able to re-visit this lovely chain. Made in Punjab is a newer restaurant chain by the same celebrity Chef Jiggs Kalra. At the beginning of this month I came to know of a Mid-night dinner buffet event to be held specially at Made In Punjab, so it was time I thought to make it for this event.
Despite it being at least an hour's drive from my place, we booked a table and went for it. It was a Friday night and the weekend was upon us. And our Punjabi culinary journey had just began for the night. We had entered a little late so we had fortunately not had to wait for a table. We sauntered in, without being attended to, found a table and sat down.
We headed straight away for the salads, and a few Punjabi snacks on the counter. I particularly liked the Dahi Vada. The starters arrived on our table.
Starters platter at Made in Punjab
The starters had at least 5 kinds of Non vegetarian options in meat kebabs and fried fish. The same went with the Vegetarian platter.
I was amazed at how gorgeous the vegetarian starters tasted. More often than not, in restaurants the meat turns out to be the hero among the starter dishes. But the vegan starters were fantastic, and I loved them.
Next the main course, the Sarson da Saag was out of the world. The earthy taste of this dish was so subtle I was almost there on the fields of Punjab! I think that was the dish I loved the most, the Saag and Rice was a lovely combination. Apart from that, there was a host of other dishes like the Butter chicken, Paneer tikka masala, Dal tadka, Nali Nihari a lovely array of delicious food.
Plateful of food at Made in Punjab
Of course the other great dish was the Nali Nihari , which was done to perfection. The Nihari is a dish famous among the Muslim community. Punjabi non-vegetarian dishes are largely similar as the North Western India cooking has been hugely influenced by the Muslim community over the years. The land has only been divided in the recent times during the country's Independence. My Tandoori Rotis went very well with the Nali Nihari.

Nali Nihari at Made in Punjab
I knew I had overeaten, as the buffet was delicious. Since it was a mid night buffet, we could see people coming in till 11:30 pm while we had already proceeded to our desserts. In desserts, there were at least 5 options to chose from out of which I had space to only try one. So I chose the Jalebis with a dollop of Rabri. They were thin, crisp and flavorful, and in spite of myself I had two helpings of these gorgeous sweetmeats.
I have had a few midnight buffet experiences in the past, but in terms of food quality and taste, this place was way better. However the only average experience were the staff. There was no one to receive us when we entered , in fact we only saw a glimpse of the Manager at the end of our meal talking loudly to one of his staff. It was a buffet service, so we were happy to take our own servings and given that it was a rush dinner service, even if I can discount that observation, I was not happy to see how the staff were visiting the buffet counters and taking food into bowls and moving into the kitchen! If the restaurant is having a special event called 'Midnight Buffet' it is only deserving that the staff hold on to the service properly till the stipulated time.
